The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. – Martin Luther King, Jr.
I enjoy reading – in particular I enjoy reading biographies and autobiographies. Typically they are the famous individuals from history, sometime current bio’s as well – usually the big 3 for me – business, sports and politics.
Last year I read the autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr. which is a collection of his memoirs edited in a biographical format by Clayborne Carson.
Hand’s down, this book was the most inspiring read ever for me. Since reading this, I have read other books on Dr. King – don’t get me wrong – I am not an expert on Dr. King, his time, his challenges or his accomplishments. I simply find him to be an amazing inspiration of an individual.
Put it this way – those days when I begin to think I am really “paying the price” to reach success, I often think of Dr. King and I am humbled with perspective for what passion, tenacity, endurance and empathy are all about.
As we celebrate his birthday tomorrow, I will think of Dr. King and his work.
